The vision of the Barbados Entrepreneurial Foundation (BEF) is for the island to become the number one “entrepreneurial hub of the world by 2020″. The 100% Wi-Fi Barbados project was conceptualized during the 1st Annual Entrepreneurship Forum and inspired by the late Prime Minister David Thompson’s dream that there should be free wireless access to the internet throughout Barbados “From Rum Shop to Bus Stop”.
The belief is that the effort will create enormous opportunity and a better life for all Barbadians. Both citizens and businesses are being encouraged to participate in the effort by offering a “guest network to the public“.
The public relations benefits achieved as a result of the 100% W–Fi Project will also give businesses who share their Wi-Fi an enormous advantage in the market in a way that doesn’t currently exist.
What is a Wi-Fi Hotspot?
A Wi-Fi Hotspot is any area where there is wireless access to the internet available for anyone to utilize. W–Fi Hotspots are very common worldwide and have become a wildly popular option for accessing the internet especially overseas.
Prior to the initiation of the 100% Wi-Fi Barbados project, there were only a few free Wi-Fi Hotspots in Barbados including restaurants and tourist areas.
The BEF’s Free Wi-Fi initiative embraces Wi-Fi because it is an established technology that can be used right now to help catapult Barbados forward on its journey to becoming the entrepreneurial hub of the world, by 2020.
