Reverend Al Sharpton to Deliver Keynote Address at 50th Anniversary Gala
Opportunities Industrialization Centers, Inc. (OIC) announced it will celebrate its 50th Anniversary during its National Conference taking place in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and the Philadelphia Marriott June 12-15, 2014. The conference will include a series of workshops on topics relating to education, labor, entrepreneurship, healthcare, social media and youth engagement, among others, as well as a job fair, health fair and prayer breakfast featuring five of the Philadelphia region’s leading Baptist ministers.
“As we prepare to mark this milestone in our organization’s history, we recognize the countless individuals who have been part of OIC’s mission and the importance of self-sufficiency to help spur economic development,” said Robert C. Nelson, President and CEO of Philadelphia OIC. “The conference, gala and prayer breakfast are the culmination of a rich, long history that started in Philadelphia and has evolved to more than 50 cities across the U.S. and in South Africa. Since its inception, OIC has served more than three million people worldwide and 90,000 in Philadelphia. We look forward to the continued growth of OIC in Philadelphia and throughout the country.” The Reverend Al Sharpton will deliver the keynote address at a black-tie gala taking place Saturday, June 14 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Also appearing will be former Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell, and U.S. Congressman John Lewis (Georgia – 5th District), who will receive the Reverend Leon H. Sullivan Lifetime Achievement Award.
Founded in 1964 by the late Reverend Dr. Leon Sullivan, OIC was created to address the lack of education and job training programs available to minorities in Philadelphia so they may better prepare themselves and become part of a highly-skilled workforce. With 44 affiliated programs in 22 states and the District of Columbia and over 50 affiliates internationally, OIC has grown into a movement, which has served more than three million disadvantaged and under-skilled people.
OIC’s 50th Anniversary is presented by Comcast. It is also generously underwritten by numerous corporations, including General Motors, PECO, Independence Blue Cross, PRWT Services, Inc., Diversified Search, ARAMARK, AmeriHealth Caritas, Citizens Bank, SugarHouse Casino, Econsult Solutions, The Philadelphia Foundation, The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and dozens of other companies.
“We are proud to join OIC in celebrating this momentous occasion,” said David L. Cohen, Executive Vice President of Comcast. “We commend OIC for serving as a role model for 50 years of educating and training individuals, and continuing Reverend Sullivan’s mission to help others to help themselves.” As a kick-off to the conference, Comcast will host a welcome reception for OIC delegates at its headquarters on Thursday, June 12.
The celebration culminates with a commemorative breakfast and church service for conference delegates on Sunday, June 16, at Zion Baptist Church, where Reverend Sullivan served as pastor for over 28 years in North Philadelphia and where the OIC movement was founded.
