Remember when the NATO-led coalition began a military intervention in Libya? Well today CNN is reporting smugglers are auctioning migrants off as slaves. “At a property outside Tripoli, CNN witnessed a dozen men go under the hammer in the space of minutes.” Watch the video below.
Libya, which formerly had the highest standard of living on the African continent, is now in ruins and housing a major slave market.
As migrants fleeing war and terror or simply looking for greater economic opportunities, flow through the Libyan border to Europe, the Libyan coastguard has begun to clamp down on the migration crisis.
This has left many migrants and their smugglers in a precarious situation. Many migrants, who are now left destitute after having sold everything to be smuggled through Libya, are being forced into slavery.
It was 2011 and the supposed goals was to end attacks against civilians and crimes against humanity. American, British, French, Belgium, Canada and forces from 14 other nations crushed the Libyan Army. Muammar Gaddafi was deposed, captured and killed bringing an end to six decades of rule.
The International Organization for Migration (IOS) has published a report based on interviews with several West African migrants who told of being bought and sold in garages and car parks in the southern city of Sabha, one of Libya’s main migrant smuggling hubs.
Guinean President Alpha Conde, who is also chairman of the African Union, demanded an inquiry and prosecutions relating to what he termed a “despicable trade … from another era.”
What will happen now? It certainly is not acceptable to turn back 400 years and enslave Africans all over again.
What say you?
