The vote was 47-52 and eight Democrats joined Republicans to vote no.
Anticipating a close vote, Vice President Joe Biden presided in the Senate chamber,
available to cast a tie-breaking vote if needed. It wasn’t necessary.
Mr. Adegbile’s qualifications are impeccable. He represents the best of the legal profession, with wide-ranging experience, and the deep respect of those with whom he has worked.” – President Barack Obama
Police and conservative group worked tirelessly to block Adegbile’s nomination because he worked at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund when the group sought justice for Mumia Abu Jamal. However supporters argued that these efforts were misinformed and only clouding the real issues (see video of press conference in Philadelphia).
In a statement, President Barack Obama called the nomination’s failure “a travesty.”
“The fact that his nomination was defeated solely based on his legal representation of a defendant runs contrary to a fundamental principle of our system of justice – and those who voted against his nomination denied the American people an outstanding public servant,” he said.
