So a group of sorors from the Beta Alpha chapter of Delta Sigma Theta took a three-day trip to Costa Rica. Now being a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, well they had me with just those details.
But then we learned that the trip was to celebrate their 10-year anniversary having pledged in spring 2007 at Florida A&M University. Oh and they rented a catamaran to go to a private beach — where they glammed it up wearing nude-colored bathing suits for their photo shoot. *Take a breath right here*
Needless to say they nearly broke the damn Internet. The celebration of Black beauty, bodies and style by our own is a rare commodity.
Even in an age where digital tools, communication channels and platforms are abundant too few Black people are creating content and celebrating our culture.
It’s a beautiful thing when it happens. And hopefully a trend that will build and go viral in a positive way.
The sisters leveraged the hashtags #MelaninIllustrated and #TITEtakescostarica to blow up Instagram and social media.
LaToya Owens is one of the organizers of the trip. She told Yahoo Style that “being in a sisterhood means having a support system and someone always there to count on.”
Well listen, with the abundance of digital tools, I’m sending you a #BIGSHOUTOUT and support from here in Bangkok, Thailand.
And Happy Anniversary to you all.
