Christopher Townsend, the attorney of Constable Noel Maitland, has sent one of his Jurors to court to argue for a habeas corpus application, which protects individuals against unlawful and indefinite imprisonment.
Constable Maitland was arrested on Wednesday by members of the Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigative Branch concerning the disappearance of his girlfriend, Donna-Lee Donaldson, but has not yet been charged. The habeas corpus application that his lawyer is seeking is a recourse in law through which a person can report an unlawful detention or imprisonment to a court and request that the court order the custodian of the person, usually a prison official, to bring the prisoner to court, to determine whether the detention is lawful.
According to reports Townsend has said he has not been given any information regarding the question-and-answer session with his client they had expected to take place today. Reports from the Jamaica Gleaner say that Townsend has also expressed his discontent with the multiple searches of Maitland’s apartment.
