The Jamaican government has launched its Electric Vehicle(EV) Trial Programme, which officials say will provide valuable information on EV policy creation and infrastructure.
The program sees the government partnering with the Stewart’s Automotive Group and Flash Motors Company Limited. Stewart’s Automotive Group is the only dealership which supplies Electric Vehicles in the country and Flash Motors Company Limited is the only distributor.
During the launch ceremony, Prime Minister Holness announced that the Electric Mobility Policy for the public transportation sector has been completed and that the new program will allow policymakers to have first-hand experience handling EVs. Which he says will be useful for future implementation of EV policy.
Discussing the launch further on his Instagram page the Prime Minister wrote, “The world is reaching a tipping point for the adoption of electric vehicles. Jamaica must not be left behind. We have set a goal that 10 per cent of transportation should be powered by electric vehicles by 2030. On Friday, we launched the Government’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Trial programme, which will assist in converting state-owned fleets to EVs. The keys for the Build Your Dreams (BYD) electric vehicles were handed over by Stewart’s Automotive Group and Electric Vehicle distributors, Flash Motors Company Limited, for five government ministries to test drive for six weeks.”
The Ministries that will be benefiting from the program are the Ministries of Transport and Mining, Science, Energy and Technology, Finance and the Public Service and two others that have not yet been named.
