American track and field sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson recently disclosed in an Instagram post about the abuse and neglect she suffered at the hands of a Jamaican female athlete whom she had a romantic relationship with.
In a post shared on her Instagram story, the 22-year-old sprinter expressed that she is still healing from the homophobic attack that she had to face from persons from her ex-lover’s home country. She further shared that she suffered more than abuse from the unnamed Jamaican woman, as she is also a victim of theft whilst they were in a relationship. Nonetheless, Richardson stated that she protected her ex-lover from discrimination by bearing the judgment herself.
“I was in a relationship with a Jamaican athlete that never cared about me from jump. I was abused and stole from yet protected her from the judgement of her country and family while they dragged me. I had to deal with homophobia and so much more that I’m still healing from,” the young sprinter wrote.
Sha’Carri Richardson rose to fame in 2019 as a freshman at Louisiana State University with a time of 10.75 seconds to break the 100 m record at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships.
She currently has a personal best time of 10.72 seconds in the 100m.
She competed with Jamaican sprint champions, Elaine Thompson-Herah, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon where she came in last place with a time of 11.14 seconds.
Since then she has avoided running against top Jamaican sprinters.
