We know there are numerous challenges facing some Black parents in seeking to obtain access to quality education for their children. It may even land you in jail as we saw with Kelley Williams Bolar in Ohio.
However, thankfully some parents have successfully devised ways to create a nurturing and supporting educational environment. Take for example the parents of young Black prodigy, twelve year-old, Stephen R. Stafford, II who is currently a student at Morehouse College. His parents took an active role to address the inadequate learning environment their child was experiencing.
In addition, Stephen’s mother Michelle Brown-Stafford now offers a website to help other parents uncover practical alternatives and solutions for today’s learning dilemmas. This is the type of sharing that is part of our culture. As we re-emphasize these values we can begin to address education, economic development, and race esteem simultaneously.
Stephen is more proof that properly nurtured, young Black children can be mentally gifted prodigies and not just fodder for the Prison Industrial Complex in America. Here’s a fresh dash of hope for our community and we wish him Godspeed.
